GMA
Glycidyl Methacrylate
You may not have heard of the tongue-twisting name Glycidyl Methacrylate, but it has already quietly permeated our daily lives — from the paint on our walls and dental restorations, to the plastic in phone casings and water purification materials, it can be found everywhere. Today, let’s uncover what makes this compound so versatile!
Glycidyl Methacrylate, abbreviated as GMA, is a colorless, transparent liquid with a molecular weight of 144.1 and a boiling point of 189°C.
Despite its ordinary appearance, it boasts remarkable properties thanks to two key functional groups: vinyl double bonds and epoxy groups.
It is this dual-function structure that enables GMA to excel across various industries.
With a purity of 99.8%, low impurities and stable performance, it is an extremely reliable chemical raw material.
Part 1
Upgrade Electrophoretic Paint – Boost Adhesion & Corrosion Resistance for High-Standard Processes.
A go-to additive for automotive & appliance coatings.

The cathodic electrophoretic coating process has extremely high requirements for paint adhesion and corrosion resistance. The addition of GMA effectively upgrades electrophoretic coatings. During formulation, its epoxy groups react with organic amines to form positively charged cations. This structure is ideally suited for cathodic electrophoresis, enabling the coating to adhere uniformly and firmly to metal surfaces, making it particularly applicable for "primer-topcoat integrated" electrophoretic systems.
When synthesizing UV resins, it helps the resin introduce hydroxyl groups, improving adhesion to substrates so that the cured coating adheres tightly and is not easy to peel off.
It also enhances the performance of polyurethane acrylates, increasing crosslinking density and making coatings more wear-resistant.
In powder coating formulations, it serves as a curing agent in combination with carboxyl polyester, effectively enhancing the crosslinking density of the film.
This significantly improves film hardness and delivers outstanding resistance to scratching and chemical attack.
Additionally, it acts as a matting agent to achieve premium matte effects in indoor hybrid powder coatings, combining superior aesthetics and texture.

Enhancing Plastics: Boosting Toughness & Compatibility, Eliminating Material Conflicts
Ever wondered why certain plastics combine high hardness with excellent toughness?
GMA is likely the key contributor!
As a compatibilizer:
PET, PBT and polyolefins are inherently incompatible, resulting in cracking during blending.
GMA serves as an interfacial modifier to promote strong interfacial adhesion, enabling the production of high-performance polymer alloys with improved durability.

As a toughener:
It significantly enhances the mechanical performance of brittle PLA, effectively improving its impact resistance.
It also mitigates the low-temperature brittleness of PET and PBT, providing outstanding low-temperature toughening effect for reliable performance in cold environments.
Medical, Environmental & Advanced Materials: All-Round Versatility Unlocked
Beyond industrial applications, GMA also shines in more precision-demanding scenarios!

Dental restorative materials often contain its analog, Bisphenol A Glycidyl Methacrylate (BIS-GMA).
When formulated with diluents, photoinitiators and inorganic fillers, it provides accurate cavity restoration and helps maintain dental health.

GMA
Raw material for magnetic microspheres:
By copolymerizing GMA with styrene and other monomers, nano-sized magnetic microspheres can be produced, with an astonishingly wide range of applications:
1. In biomedicine, antibodies or bioactive molecules can be immobilized on the surface of these magnetic microspheres, allowing them to capture specific biomolecules.
This assists scientists in separation, targeted drug delivery, and even cell labeling and imaging.
2. In environmental science, these microspheres have a large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity, enabling them to "absorb" heavy metals and organic pollutants from water.
They can then be easily removed via magnetic separation, leaving clean water behind.
3. In materials science, blending these microspheres with polymers produces magnetic yet strong composite materials, which hold great promise for use in a wide range of high-tech applications in the future.
More durable coatings, more versatile plastics, more precise medicine, a cleaner environment —
GMA is powering a better life!
This GMA product recommended by Kastar features low impurity content and a high purity of up to 99.8%.
It delivers stable performance and has a wide range of applications.
