Data Speaking: A Guide to Choosing Multiple Systems of Talc Powder, Have You Upgraded Your Coatings

Preface

Talc powder carries decades of production history and extensive application history. In early paint treatment, there were few coloring pigments and special color pigments, so talc powder was used. In the early 20th century, with the formation of a large number of synthetic resins, the glossiness, fullness, adhesion, and durability of coatings also improved.

The talc powder series products launched by Kastar, as an important raw material for improving paint color and durability, have the advantages of high purity and small particle size. They can be applied to various systems and can effectively enhance the filling and other physical and mechanical properties of coatings.

/Talc powder/

Talc powder is a white or off white, sand free fine powder that is odorless, tasteless, smooth, and easy to adhere to the skin. It can withstand temperatures up to 1300 ℃ and has low electrical and thermal conductivity. It generally does not react with acids and bases and has a wide range of applications in the fields of medicine, cosmetics, papermaking, ceramics, and rubber.

The main component of talcum powder is hydrated magnesium silicate, which has the ability to lubricate, cover, and absorb oils and fats. It is insoluble in water, dilute hydrochloric acid, or 8.5% sodium hydroxide solution. Hardness 1.0~1.5, refractive index 1.54~1.59, specific gravity 2.7~2.8, specific surface area 2.41~2.42m2/g-1.

Application of 01 ultrafine talc powder in water-based coatings

The addition of fine talc powder to water-based coatings can have a significant impact on their performance level.

For example, after the application of fine talcum powder, the surface dryness and corrosion resistance of the coating will be improved to a certain extent. However, as the amount of fine talcum powder added increases, its transmittance and adsorption force may show a decreasing trend.

△ The influence of ultrafine talc powder on water-based coatings

In the application of water-based coatings, controlling the amount of talc powder added can effectively improve the surface dryness, light transmittance, and hardness of the coating, but has little effect on the impact resistance and flexibility of the coating.

△ Experimental results

According to Table 4, talc powder has a certain impact on the performance of coatings. As the mesh size increases, although the properties such as scratching, bending, and impact remain basically unchanged, in terms of adhesion, the performance of 2500 mesh sliding stone powder is significantly better than that of 2000 mesh, and the salt spray performance and adhesion performance after salt spray are also the same.

2 # is a surface modified talc powder, which also has improved adhesion and other properties, significantly better than the same 2500 mesh talc powder, and has lower KU viscosity, which is conducive to spraying construction.

Application of talc powder in water-based UV coating

Wood materials have hydrophilicity and moisture swelling and drying shrinkage properties. Applying water-based UV coatings can form a highly flexible, scratch resistant, and chemical resistant protective layer on the surface of wood.

△ Water based UV scheme

Add talc powder to the water-based UV coating according to the experimental design amount; After spraying the wooden board, dry it in an oven at 40 ℃ for 10 minutes, and then transfer it to a UV irradiation box.

△ Impact resistance data of coatings under different addition amounts and irradiation times

Change the amount of talc powder added to different mass fractions: 0, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%.

△ Impact strength data under different addition amounts

When the mass fraction of talc powder increases from 0 to 0.5%, the hardness, adhesion, and impact strength of the UV coating change significantly. When the mass fraction increases to 2%, all three test results remain unchanged. When the mass fraction exceeds 2%, the hardness, adhesion, and impact strength decrease again.

Talc powder is inexpensive, non-toxic, and odorless. It exhibits inertness towards most chemical reagents and has the characteristics of low thermal conductivity and high heat shock resistance. Therefore, it can be introduced into UV coatings to improve their performance.

/Experimental Summary/

After in-depth research and multiple experiments, LA TL 1 and LA TL 2 have a significant improvement effect on the physical and chemical properties of coatings in 2000-3000 mesh talc powder. With appropriate addition amounts, they can effectively improve the testing performance of different coating systems, reduce formulation costs, maximize economic benefits, and achieve better cost-effectiveness and market competitiveness.

In addition to the above-mentioned products, Kastar also has other talc powder products with different mesh sizes. In addition, there are also special talc powder, conventional talc powder and other products that can be used in different scenarios to efficiently improve the coating construction performance and enhance the protective effect of the coating.
