Introduction
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC), chemical formula: Cell(OC₂H₄OH)ₘ(OH)₃₋ₙ, is a white to light yellow, odorless, non-toxic free-flowing powder. Derived from cotton or wood pulp and ethylene oxide, HEC is produced through an etherification reaction where alkali-activated pulp reacts with ethylene oxide. The resulting product is refined and milled into a fine granular powder.
Product Introduction

Product characteristics
Morphology and solubility:
The powdered form facilitates storage, transportation, and use. HEC features rapid dispersion and easy water solubility; it dissolves quickly in both cold and hot water to form solutions with reproducible properties.
Viscosity characteristics:
Viscosity ranges from 400-6000 mPa·s (Brookfield LV). The appropriate viscosity grade can be selected based on specific requirements to meet formulation needs for various coatings and daily chemical products. It performs equally well in thin liquids or thick pastes.
pH range:
pH value of 6.0 - 8.5 (1% solution concentration). Within this range, the product exhibits excellent chemical stability and can synergize with various other components.
Moisture content:
Moisture content ≤5% (ASTM D1347 - 72). Strictly controlled moisture content ensures product quality and performance.
Bulk density:
Bulk density ≥600g/L, ensuring easy pouring and reduced dust emission during use.

Storage requirements
When unopened, HEC can be stored for extended periods. Once opened, ambient humidity may affect moisture content, and the product may be contaminated by environmental microorganisms. When stored in sealed containers or in original packaging under dry, room-temperature conditions, HEC has a shelf life exceeding 2 years. For high-viscosity products, viscosity may slightly decrease after prolonged storage. HEC absorbs moisture from humid air, so opened packages must be tightly resealed.
02 Product Advantages

1. Excellent Biostability: Effectively resists microbial degradation, extending product service life.
2. High Thickening Efficiency: Significantly increases system viscosity to meet diverse application requirements.
3. Superior Storage Stability: Maintains stable performance under specified storage conditions without deterioration over extended periods.
4. Controlled Delayed Dissolution: Ensures predictable dissolution kinetics for adaptable manufacturing processes.
5. Optimal Application Properties: Delivers excellent flow and leveling during coating application.
6. Compatibility with Pigments/Fillers: Promotes uniform color distribution and enhances finish quality.
7. High Water Retention: Preserves moisture during film formation to optimize coating performance.
03 Application Area

HEC exhibits excellent solubility in both hot and cold water, maintaining stability without precipitation even under high-temperature or boiling conditions. This grants it broad solubility and unique viscosity characteristics, along with non-thermal gelling properties.
Its non-ionic nature ensures strong salt tolerance, enabling compatibility with various water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and salts. Additionally, HEC delivers:
- Superior water retention
- Effective flow regulation
- Excellent film-forming capability
- Reduced fluid loss
- High compatibility
- Protective colloid functionality
These combined properties solidify HEC’s competitive edge in latex paints, petroleum, personal care, and other industries.
Building materials field

In architectural coatings, HEC plays a vital role in both interior and exterior paints.
For textured finishes and stone-like coatings, it increases viscosity to ensure smooth application while enhancing adhesion for durable, long-lasting performance.
In paste fillers, HEC's superior thickening properties enable better gap and pore filling, creating a smooth, even surface.
For emulsion-based tile adhesives and emulsion plastering mortars, it not only boosts bonding strength but also improves workability—making tile installation more secure and plastering more efficient.
In waterproof construction materials, HEC forms a dense protective film that effectively blocks water penetration, delivering reliable waterproofing protection.
